Erik went under the knife recently to have the ol' gall bladder removed. On Feb 2 Erik was having some pretty bad stomach pains and heaved a bit. We thought at first it was the stomach bug, but after a few days of the pain not going away decided it was best to go to the dr. He had done a bit of research on the computer and had kinda diagnosed it himself before he even got to the dr. On friday the 6th he got an appointment and they did blood work and an x-ray. They couldn't get him in for an ultrasound until the following Monday. The dr said if he had an attack over the weekend it would be best to go to the ER. Sure enough Sunday night Erik woke with a lot of pain and headed over to the ER. They gave him some morphine and drew blood, since the apptointment on Friday was so late in the day the blood that was all ready drawn hadn't been looked at yet. The bllod work came back great and they told him to just go to his U/S appointment on Monday. I need to add that he has now had the pain for almost a week. Erik was so uncomfortable and not digesting well that he had been on mostly liquids.
Monday Erik went to the ultrasound and sure enough a stone in his gall bladder, what he had diagnosed it as before the dr did. He was able to meet with the surgeon that same day and scheduled surgery for Tuesday. The surgeon told Erik that there was the possibility of another stone being stuck in the duct but they wouldn't know until they got in there and looked. So 1pm on Tuesday Erik was knocked out, had his belly shaved and they made 4 small incisions to take the gall bladder out. They did a dye test on him to check for the other blockage they were worried about. Yep, another blockage. What was suppose to be outpatient surgery turned into an over night stay. We didn't think that he was going to have the second procedure done until the next morning, but the surgeon got a hold of the other dr and they were able to do it on Tuesday around 5 pm. Just as Erik was coming out of anesthesia, he was put back under. Only this time it wasn't another cut in the belly, it was a scope down the mouth. They were able to remove the other stone successfully. Everything went great. He still stayed the night at the hospital to rest and so they could watch for infection. He came home the next day very sore and tired. Erik was able to spend most of the week in bed watching movies and I think that helped with the fast recovery.
He was back on dad duty Monday the 16th and went back to work on the 17th. We are so thankful that everything went well. This was a first for our marriage. I have been the only one to stay the night at the hospital with each of our kids being born, this is our first surgery. I am so thankful for insurance, just so you know, if you don't have insurance and had to have done what Erik did, it would cost you $19K, ouch!
We are so happy to have daddy feeling better and he is happy to be eating again!
We had our first cavity fixed on Friday. Dacia had two small cavities on the right side of her mouth, one on top and one on bottom. I was a little nervous about how she would do with the drill, but just like getting stitches, she was the perfect patient. A small peep getting shots but didn't budge through the rest of the work.
Ashlyn is now in primary and having fun being a Sunbeam. A couple weeks ago she gave her first talk. She is so smart and it is amazing to me how much little kids understand. My girls probably know and understand more about the church than I did at twice their age. It is so fun to see them progress and learn new things. And at the same time also hard to see them grow up so fast. My Ashlyn will be 4 next month and we are excited for her birthday. The cake requests have been changing daily, so we'll see what we end up with.
